Young people experience democracy in action during visit to parliament
Ten young people supported by Telford & Wrekin Virtual School were given a memorable opportunity to experience democracy in action during a recent visit to London.
Many of the young people were visiting the capital for the first time and arrived full of excitement for a day that would provide a unique insight into the heart of British democracy.
The group visited the Houses of Parliament, where they were taken on a guided tour and learned about the rich history of one of the country's most iconic institutions.
The young people then watched proceedings from the Commons Gallery, where they observed the Secretary of State for Defence deliver a speech before witnessing parliamentary debate first-hand.
The visit also included a question-and-answer session with Shaun Davies MP, who spent time discussing a wide range of issues that mattered to the young people. They asked thoughtful and insightful questions about politics, representation and public service, helping to make the session both engaging and informative.
As a special addition to the day, the young people also made a visit to Number 10 Downing Street, creating an unforgettable highlight for the group. While there, the young people also enjoyed the unexpected pleasure of meeting Larry, the famous resident cat of Downing Street.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:

"I would particularly like to thank Shaun Davies MP for his support in facilitating this visit. His team gave our young people a warm welcome, organised a fascinating programme and generously gave their time to answer questions and share their experiences of public service.
"The opportunity to tour parliament, watch debates from the Commons Gallery and visit Number 10 Downing Street was invaluable. Experiences like these help broaden horizons, build confidence and encourage young people to believe that their voices matter.”
