Young litter heroes lead the way
Pupils from Lightmoor Village Primary School have been praised for their commitment to environmental action as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s 2025 Schools Litter Picking Competition.
In just two hours, more than 100 pupils from nine schools across the borough collected 70 bags of litter, inspiring a wider borough-wide movement to protect green spaces and take pride in where we live.
The competition forms part of the Council’s support for the Great British Spring Clean, delivered in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, and encourages young people to take an active role in improving their communities.
Lightmoor Village Primary School led the way with 12 bags collected, earning them the title of primary school category winners. Pupils were presented with their award during a special school assembly attended by Councillor Paul Davis, Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride.
Councillor Davis said: “The pupils at Lightmoor - particularly those in the eco group - have shown outstanding leadership and teamwork, setting a shining example for their peers and for the wider communities of Lightmoor, Doseley, and Horsehay.
“To have the whole school join them in celebration was a meaningful tribute to their efforts as proud ambassadors of both their school and their community. I hope their actions will inspire positive change across the area.”
This year’s campaign saw over 400 people involved across 32 clean-up events, including youth groups, businesses, families and volunteers - collecting more than 300 bags of rubbish.
During the assemblies, pupils reflected on their experiences and were encouraged to involve their families by taking home Street Champion application packs, helping to grow the borough’s existing network of over 1,700 Street Champions.
