Council backs local pubs ahead of England’s World Cup clash with Mexico
As England prepares to face Mexico in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Monday, the Council is continuing to support local pubs, bars and clubs as they get ready to welcome football fans.
The Government has confirmed that pubs can remain open until 5am on Monday morning to allow supporters to watch the match in full, with England's knockout tie kicking off at 1am.
With local venues expected to see increased demand as fans come together to cheer on the Three Lions, the Council's licensing team has been working closely with businesses to help them make the most of the occasion while ensuring events remain safe and well managed.
Since 11 June, the team has processed 51 Temporary Event Notice (TEN) applications, with the majority directly linked to FIFA World Cup fixtures. The notices have enabled venues with licenses to extend opening hours, provide additional entertainment and create enhanced matchday experiences for customers. Compliance officers have also visited over 80 premises to support and give advice on staying compliant and safe during the World Cup.
Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Safer Streets and Better Housing, said: "England's match against Mexico is expected to attract huge interest and provides a fantastic opportunity for our local hospitality sector.
"We recognise the hard work pubs, bars and clubs are putting in to create memorable experiences for customers, and our Licensing Team has been working proactively with businesses throughout the tournament to help them access the permissions and support they need.
"In just three weeks we've processed 51 Temporary Event Notices, including many directly linked to World Cup fixtures, helping venues make the most of this global sporting event while ensuring celebrations remain safe and well managed. Compliance officers have also visited over 80 premises to support and give advice on staying compliant and safe during the World Cup.
"As fans prepare to support England on Monday, we're encouraging residents to back their local venues, enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate responsibly."
The Council is also reminding venue operators to ensure they remain compliant with licensing requirements, including permissions for late-night refreshment and the use of outdoor spaces.
