Wellington Orbit launches £1.50 Saturday morning cinema screenings
Families across Telford and Wrekin will soon be able to enjoy the magic of the big screen for less, as Wellington Orbit launches its new Saturday Morning Cinema programme this month.
Every Saturday morning, the independent cinema and community venue will screen family-friendly films for just £1.50 per ticket.
The initiative, which has received funding from Telford & Wrekin Council's Councillors' Pride Fund, aims to make cinema more affordable and accessible for children, young people and families, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the big screen together at an even more accessible price.
The new programme also revives a much-loved local tradition.
Many residents will remember Saturday morning cinema screenings at the Clifton, and Wellington Orbit hopes to build on that legacy by creating a regular, affordable cinema experience for a new generation of young film lovers while welcoming back those who remember the original screenings.
As an independent cinema and community venue based at 1 Station Road, Wellington Orbit is committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience film.
Saturday Morning Cinema forms part of the venue's wider mission to increase access to culture, create opportunities for shared experiences, and to bring the local community together through cinema.
As well as support from Telford & Wrekin Council, the project has been made possible with support from Films Hub Midlands, awarding funds from the National Lottery to bring the project to more audiences across the UK.
Launching the Saturday screenings follows the completion of a new multi-use cultural hub at Wellington Orbit in early June 2026.
The first floor of the cinema has been brought back into active use to create additional spaces for the community, including a dance studio, as part of a programme funded and project managed by Telford & Wrekin Council.
The Councillors’ Pride Fund gives ward members the opportunity to allocate funding towards improvements or projects within their ward.
Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council Leader, said:
“We’ve invested into Wellington Orbit, as part of our wider investment in Wellington, to create multi-functional community spaces for exhibitions, performing arts and community outreach services.
“Creating a vibrant, cultural hub in the centre of Wellington will drive more footfall to the town’s high street and complements the public realm works and the transformation of the historic Wellington Market which is well underway.”
“The refurbishment has more than doubled the size of Wellington Orbit’s current facilities, giving the venue more scope to attract new customers through a range of different activities.
“We’re sure the Saturday screenings, which we’ve supported through our Councillor’s Pride Fund, will be a popular addition to Wellington Orbit’s calendar.”
Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure & Ward Member for Arleston & College, said:
“We’re pleased to support the launch of Saturday morning screenings at Wellington Orbit through our Councillors’ Pride Fund.
“Wellington Orbit is now a vibrant, cultural hub in the heart of Wellington with fantastic facilities which will drive more footfall to Wellington and the high street.
“Showing family films on a Saturday morning can only attract more visitors and families to Wellington Orbit at the weekend.”
The first Saturday Morning Cinema screenings will begin starting with The Magic Faraway Tree on 4th July, with a programme of family favourites and popular children's films shown throughout the year.
Damian Breeze, Manager at the Wellington Orbit, said:
"We're delighted to be launching our new Saturday Morning Cinema screenings and to be able to offer tickets at just £1.50. We want the Orbit to be an affordable, welcoming place for everyone, and this initiative helps make a trip to the cinema more accessible for local families.
“We're also really excited to bring back the tradition of Saturday morning cinema, creating the same kind of special experiences that many people remember from their own childhoods.
“Thanks to the support of the Councillors' Pride Fund and the Films Hub Midlands awarding funds from the National Lottery, we're able to offer these screenings and look forward to welcoming both new and returning audiences to the Orbit."
Details of upcoming screenings and booking information will be available via Wellington Orbit's website and social media channels.
