Virtual School adviser recognised for work with children in care
A dedicated education adviser has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to helping children in care and care-experienced young people access higher education opportunities.
Nick Cunliffe, education adviser at Telford & Wrekin Council’s Virtual School, has received an award from Higher Horizons in recognition of his commitment to supporting young people’s educational progression and raising aspirations through university outreach and partnership working.
The award celebrates Nick’s leadership in creating opportunities for children in care and care-experienced young people to explore higher education and consider pathways that may once have seemed out of reach.
Nick’s recognition comes as Telford & Wrekin Council continues to strengthen its commitment to raising aspirations through a long-term partnership involving Keele University, the University of Staffordshire, Higher Horizons and seven local authorities across the region.
The partnership will deliver an annual University Experience Programme for young people in years 7 to 11, providing opportunities to visit university campuses, meet students and staff, and learn more about higher education, employability, student finance, accommodation and the application process.
These experiences are designed to help young people see higher education as an achievable option, while building confidence, broadening horizons and addressing common barriers such as affordability, limited access to information, application support and year-round accommodation.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:
