Ureys brings tastes of the globe to Oakengates

Popular takeaway Ureys is bringing street food from around the globe to Oakengates after opening a new unit in the heart of the town.

Ureys Street Food has taken ownership of 41 Market Street, filling an empty unit in theatre quarter as the regeneration of Oakengates continues.

The business serves freshly prepared food including Indian, Thai, Caribbean, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Italian and Texan dishes plus much more.

Ureys, which became extremely popular on TikTok for its viral food videos, was previously based from a trailer at Telford Shopping Centre but closed in 2024 to make room for another food outlet.

Owner Norma Urey was keen to return to trading and has snapped up the opportunity to open at the new Oakengates venue.

Councillor Ollie Vickers, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs, Transport and Digital Connectivity, said:

“Ureys is a fantastic addition to the high street in Oakengates.

"It was a popular business previously and we're sure that this relocation in the heart of Oakengates will help Norma to grow her business and customer base even further.

"It's another unit filled in the area around Theatre Quarter and shows our continued support for businesses as the regeneration of Oakengates continues."

The Oakengates Theatre Quarter programme is a major regeneration project in Oakengates, which is transforming a dated 1960s shopping precinct into a modern pedestrianised retail, residential and cultural hub.

It's all part of Telford & Wrekin's investment and commitment to create a better Borough and place to live, learn, work and socialise.

Pride in Our High Street programme start-up grants support independent businesses with permanent moves to the high street.

Norma Urey said:

"It’s been a long time coming but I truly believe that everything happens at the right time for good reason.

"I was heartbroken to have to leave my pitch at the Telford Centre but the community lifted me and carried me onto this new journey.

"I have full faith that they will continue to do so and help me to fulfil my promise in bringing new footfall to the lovely town of Oakengates.

"Not only did my faithful customers support me emotionally, they approached Telford & Wrekin Council who listened to their concerns and contacted me immediately to see how they could help me move forward and continue my business of 15 years.

"I applied for a Pride in Our High Street grant which included a new, exciting business plan which I put together with support from a wonderful customer and friend.

"I’ve received tremendous support from everyone at the Council and the support has been far more than just the award of a high street grant.

"Joy McGeown from the Council's Prosperity and Investment team has given me so much moral support at different stages and I will always be grateful.

"The Oakengates business community has given me a warm welcome and I'm delighted to be here.

"This business is my passion and I’m now looking forward to feeding customers old and new with the same love and devotion as always."
