Urban Games Offers New Way for Families to Get Involved in ‘10 by 10’
Telford & Wrekin Council is encouraging families to make the most of its ‘10 by 10’ initiative this year by getting involved in the Urban Games - a free, borough-wide programme of fun, active sessions running during school holidays.
The ‘10 by 10’ initiative gives every child in the borough the chance to experience ten life-enhancing activities before the age of ten, from learning to swim or visiting the countryside.
Now, with the Urban Games in full swing, families have a fresh and exciting way to tick off key experiences - especially joining in competitive sports, one of the core ‘10 by 10’ goals.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, (Lab) Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment & Skills: “Urban Games is a brilliant way to bring ‘10 by 10’ to life. It’s fun, it’s free, and it gives children the chance to try new things, build confidence, and get active with others.”
“We know how important it is for children to feel part of something, and team sports and shared experiences help build friendships, resilience, and a sense of community. Urban Games is a great way to support that, while helping families engage with ‘10 by 10’ in a hands-on way.”
The Urban Games offer a wide range of activities for children and young people, including:
- Football, cricket, and hockey with professional coaches
- BMX biking and cycling sessions
- Climbing and high ropes at Telford Town Park
- Nature trails and outdoor play for toddlers and younger children
These sessions are open to children up to age 16, but many are perfect for under-10s working through their ‘10 by 10’ adventure cards - especially those looking to try team sports, explore the outdoors, or learn to ride a bike.
Every primary school in the borough is part of the ‘10 by 10’ programme, and children receive adventure cards to track their progress. Families can also create an account at 10by10.telford.gov.uk to follow their child’s journey and discover local events and offers.
