Too loud too often: Entertainment gear switched off after repeated noise complaints

Telford & Wrekin Council has successfully seized entertainment equipment from a property on Market Street, Oakengates, following repeated breaches of a noise abatement notice.

Environmental Protection officers attended Telford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 17 December to apply for a warrant of entry under Section 81(3) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, after continued reports of amplified music causing a statutory nuisance. The warrant was granted the same morning.

At 2pm that afternoon, officers executed the warrant and entered the property, supported by West Mercia Police. A locksmith was on standby in line with the risk assessment, though entry was granted by the occupier and their services were not required.

Officers seized equipment linked to the noise nuisance, including a TV, DJ deck and speakers. The items were photographed and inventoried in accordance with standard operational procedures.

This enforcement action forms part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s ongoing work to tackle persistent noise nuisance and support residents affected by anti‑social behaviour.

Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement said: “Residents have the right to feel safe and comfortable in their homes.

“Where individuals repeatedly ignore formal warnings and continue to cause serious disturbance, the council will take appropriate enforcement action. The seizure of noise‑making equipment is always a last resort, but it is an effective tool to stop persistent nuisance and protect the wider community.”

It’s important to remember that no home is completely soundproof, and noise from gardens or garages can often be heard by neighbours. Many people simply aren’t aware they are causing a disturbance and are happy to make changes, particularly if approached politely.

Ask yourself:

  • Does the noise happen regularly?
  • Does it continue for an unreasonable length of time?

Noise complaints can be reported to the council 24/7 through their online portal for issues like loud music, parties, barking dogs, or construction noise. For further information visit the website at www.telford.gov.uk/report-it
