Flu can be a serious illness for young children, potentially leading to hospitalisation. Vaccinating children not only protects them but also helps prevent the spread of the virus to more vulnerable family members and the wider community.

For the first time, children aged 2–3 can now receive the nasal spray flu vaccine at participating community pharmacies, in addition to GP surgeries. School-age children will continue to be vaccinated in schools or community clinics, with parents asked to return consent forms promptly. Children aged six months and older with certain health conditions are also eligible for the vaccine.

The flu vaccine is quick, safe and painless, usually given as a nasal spray. For families who do not accept porcine gelatine, an injectable, porcine-free alternative is available.

Cllr Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Healthier Communities said: “Getting our little ones vaccinated against flu isn’t just about protecting them - it’s about safeguarding grandparents, siblings, and everyone in our community. I encourage all parents and carers in Telford and Wrekin to book their child’s flu vaccination early and take advantage of the new pharmacy option. Every jab brings us closer to a healthier winter for all.”

Rachel Robinson, Director of Public Health for NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, said:
"Flu is more than just a cold for young children. It can make them very sick, very quickly, and in some cases, it can lead to hospitalisation. Vaccinating children aged 2–3 years is a safe, quick, and effective way to protect them, and it helps prevent the virus spreading to siblings, grandparents, and other vulnerable people in the community.”

Parents and carers can book their child’s flu vaccine in the following ways:
