Telford & Wrekin Council is calling on residents, businesses and community groups to get involved in Plastic Free July 2026, as part of a global movement to reduce single-use plastic and protect the environment.

Throughout July, the Council will be raising awareness of the impact of plastic pollution, encouraging simple everyday swaps, and showcasing the work already taking place across the Borough to cut waste and reuse materials.

Plastic Free July, led by the Plastic Free Foundation, encourages people to make small but meaningful changes, such as switching to reusable bottles, bags and containers, that collectively can have a big impact on the environment.

The campaign will also highlight the Council’s ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics, alongside recent improvements to recycling services, including the introduction of food and drink cartons as part of the Borough’s doorstep recycling scheme.

As part of the campaign, local success stories will be showcased both from individuals and businesses.

Councillor Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning & Sustainability, said:

“Plastic Free July is a great opportunity for everyone in our Borough to take simple steps that make a real difference. Single-use plastics are a major source of pollution, often ending up in our rivers and green spaces where they can last for generations.

“As a Council, we are committed to reducing our use of single-use plastics and supporting residents and businesses to do the same. Whether it’s refilling, reusing or recycling more, small changes can have a big impact, and we’re proud to be working with local organisations to lead the way.”

The campaign will feature practical tips and advice, community stories, and opportunities for residents to share their own ideas and experiences through social media. Staff and Council services are also being encouraged to identify further ways to reduce single-use plastics in their day-to-day operations.

Residents are encouraged to get involved by making simple swaps, sharing tips, and taking part in conversations throughout the month.
