This year, 172 young people applied for the grant, with 130 successful applicants receiving funding to support their ambitions. Those who applied but did not meet the criteria have been offered support through alternative routes.

At a celebration event held at Mercure Telford Hotel on 17 July, successful applicants were recognised and presented with their awards. The funding awarded will help them pursue a wide range of opportunities, including education, training, employment, business start-ups, creative projects and personal development.

The Young Person Grant continues to provide practical support, helping young people overcome barriers and access opportunities that support their future aspirations.

Applications this year reflected the remarkable ambition and diversity of young people across Telford and Wrekin. Successful projects included support for educational courses, specialist equipment, travel costs, professional qualifications, creative ventures and community-focused initiatives.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said:

“Every year this event reminds us just how much talent, determination and ambition we have among young people across our Borough.

“The Young Person Grant is about giving young people that extra support when they need it most. From accessing training and developing new skills to continuing their education or pursuing a career goal, the impact can be significant.

“What comes across every year is the effort and ambition that young people put into their applications.

“Their achievements speak for themselves, and they should be incredibly proud of everything they have accomplished.”

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, also commented:

“The quality of applications received this year was outstanding. It is clear that our young people are not only full of ambition, but also deeply thoughtful about how they can use this opportunity to better themselves.

“We have had a strong range of applications, from funding for specialist training and qualifications to support with transport, equipment and educational opportunities.

“This event was an opportunity to celebrate the recipients of the grant, as well as the parents, carers, schools, colleges and organisations that have supported them along the way.

“What makes this grant so special is that it’s not just about money - it’s about listening. Listening to what our young people need, and responding with real, practical support.

“I would like to congratulate every young person recognised at the event and wish them every success for the future.”

The Young Person Grant 2026 is supported this year by Capgemini, Balfour Beatty and Arriva, helping to create opportunities for young people.
