Demonstrating its commitment to protecting, caring for and investing in local communities, Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to support the opening of a pioneering supported living scheme in Ironbridge. The Heritage Walk development has welcomed its first residents to 12 purpose-built supported living homes, which has redeveloped three existing residential care services into housing. This approach, in partnership with learning disability charity Hft and five-star homebuilder Lioncourt Homes, enables current residents to move out of residential care and into their own homes, promoting independence and choice.

These state-of-the-art properties sit within a wider development of 80 homes, creating an inclusive community where learning disabled adults can live independently alongside their neighbours.

After a decade of planning and a year of construction, Tom, Simon, Abigail and Joanne have moved into their new homes, marking a significant milestone in delivering person-centred care and housing choice in the Borough.

With support from the Council, adults with learning disabilities have been involved throughout the process – from initial design concepts through to selecting interior finishes and choosing their housemates. This co-produced approach ensures homes truly meet the needs and aspirations of those who will live in them.

Tom, 39, one of the first residents, said: "I am so excited about the move into my new home. I've been looking forward to it for a long time. Moving into supported living will give me a new lease of life and the freedom to do new things. It will give me more independence."

Tom, who works as a chef in a local café, is looking forward to cooking for his housemates and building new friendships.

Councillor Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Public Health & Healthier Communities, said: "This development embodies everything we stand for at Telford & Wrekin Council – protecting the wellbeing of our residents, caring for those who need support, and investing in innovative solutions that improve lives.

“Heritage Walk shows what can be achieved when partners work together with a shared vision of creating inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to live well, independently and with dignity. We are delighted to see these first residents making their new houses into homes."

A special Opening Ceremony took place on 29 October, with the Shropshire Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Mandy Thorn MBE, cutting the ribbon alongside Amanda Bunce, Hft Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Rachel Cartwight, Land Director at Lioncourt Homes, said: "We are incredibly proud to have partnered with Hft to deliver an important part of this excellent development. To see the first residents moving in and making these houses their homes is hugely rewarding."

Hft Chief Executive Officer Steve Veevers said: "Hft's pioneering partnership with the people we support and Lioncourt Homes is groundbreaking and showcases the future for person-centred support and independence."

The development demonstrates Telford & Wrekin Council's ongoing commitment to ensuring adults with care needs have access to high-quality housing options that promote independence and community integration.
