The recognition follows a 25% increase in the reach of the Council's Bikeability programme over the past three years, reflecting continued efforts to give more children and young people the opportunity to develop essential cycling and road safety skills.

Bikeability training is delivered by the Council’s Active Travel and Road Safety Education team in schools across Telford and Wrekin, supporting children at different stages of their cycling development.

The achievement comes after a record-breaking period locally, with 461 Bikeability places delivered over three months, the highest number recorded since the programme began in 2007.

Alongside Bikeability, the Council’s Re-wheeled initiative helps children continue cycling by refurbishing donated bikes and giving them a new home. More than 30 bikes have been provided through the scheme so far this year.

Councillor Ollie Vickers, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Transport & Digital Connectivity, said:

“We're delighted to receive this recognition from The Bikeability Trust.

“It reflects the hard work and commitment of our Active Travel and Road Safety Education team, as well as the fantastic support we receive from schools across the Borough.

"We want every child to have the opportunity to take part, which is why we're committed to removing barriers and supporting initiatives such as Re-wheeled, helping more children access bikes and continue cycling beyond their training.

“We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and will continue working with schools to give even more children the chance to benefit from Bikeability.”

The Council will continue working with schools across Telford and Wrekin to increase access to Bikeability training and support safer, healthier and more active journeys.
