Running throughout October, Black History Month is an opportunity to recognise the heritage, culture and achievements of Black communities in Britain and beyond. This year’s national theme “Standing firm in power and pride” highlights the strength and dignity of Black communities in the face of adversity, while celebrating courage, identity, pride and confidence.

A varied programme of local events has been organised by the Council together with partner organisations and community groups. These activities offer the opportunity to come together, share experiences and learn more about different cultures, traditions and the ongoing contributions of Black communities.

Events include:

  • Art showcase – 1 to 31 October, Southwater One Library (by David Miller).
  • Health and wellbeing event - 4 October, Telford Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort.
  • Food and culture event - 5 October, Cravings Africa, Ketley.
  • The Blac Awards - 17 October, Shrewsbury Football Stadium.
  • Nigerian Independence Day - 18 October, Telford Cultural and Leisure Centre, Hadley.
  • Further activities organised by TAARC and other local groups throughout the month.

In addition, Southwater One will be lit up on 1 October to mark the start of Black History Month.

Councillor Paul Davis, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride said:

“Black History Month is a time to celebrate culture, heritage and achievements while bringing people together to share and learn from each other.

We are delighted to support such a varied programme of events, created in partnership with local groups and communities. These activities are an opportunity to build connections, inspire pride and strengthen our commitment to inclusion across the Borough”.

The events have been organised by the Council, alongside local partners including TAARC, Interfaith Council, and Nigerian and Ghanaian groups.
