Telford Bike Hub wins national award for community engagement
Telford and Wrekin Council’s Active Travel & Road Safety Education Team has won ‘Community Engagement Project of the Year’ at the National Travel Awards 2025 for the fantastic work delivered by the Telford Bike Hub.
The award recognises projects that make a real difference in local communities by encouraging active and sustainable travel. The Bike Hub stood out for its wide range of support for residents from learn-to-ride sessions to adaptive cycling for people with additional needs and its busy programme of events.
Based in Telford Town Park, the hub offers a variety of bikes and scooters for residents and visitors, including e-bikes, recycled bikes and adaptive bikes. The team works closely with schools, parent groups and local organisations to help people build confidence and enjoy cycling.
Since reopening in 2022, the Bike Hub has:
- Hired out more than 5,000 bikes
- Taught over 3,000 children to ride
- The team have supported over 2,500 children to achieve Level 2 Bikeability
- Run weekly adaptive cycling sessions
- Delivered Bikeability sessions for SEND children
- Provided maintenance and safety sessions through Dr Bike
- Run public events including their hugely popular yearly glow rides
The Hub also travels across the borough as part of events such as Urban Games, giving children the chance to try cycling in a safe setting.
Councillor Ollie Vickers, Cabinet Member for the Economy & Transport said:
“This is fantastic recognition for the team. The Bike Hub is a brilliant facility for our Borough and plays a huge role in helping people of all ages and abilities get confident on a bike. We’re really proud of what they’ve achieved and the opportunities they create for our community”.
“I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in the Bike Hub for their commitment to promoting active travel”.
Kellie Thompson, Group Manager for Active Travel & Public Transport, said:
“We’re proud to make cycling accessible for everyone and to support families, schools and community groups across Telford and Wrekin. This award celebrates the hard work of the team, and we look forward to reaching even more people in the future.”
The Active Travel & Road Safety Education Team will continue to expand its offer in 2026, including more community sessions through active travel outreach and partnership projects.
