Telford and Wrekin teen turns his life around thanks to council’s free footy sessions
Kyran Purohit, 17, is a coach for AFC Telford United Foundation with a bright future ahead of him. But things could have turned out differently. Kyran used to hang around with his mates and was easily bored.
Then he heard about AFC Telford Kicks for 11-16-year-olds. The free football sessions are funded by Telford & Wrekin Council’s Building Safer and Stronger Communities programme in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner.
Kyran decided to try a session and he’s never looked back.
“I didn’t expect the football session to be that great but the other kids were my age, and the coaches were brilliant at running it, and it was enjoyable, so I kept going week after week.
“I found it was inclusive. Everyone was given a chance, no one was sitting out. I felt like I was part of something and made loads of friends. Some of the kids had never played football. It’s great because they get to access free sport every week and improve their skills.
“I love seeing the way kids like me improve their behaviour and their wellbeing and social skills. It’s getting them off the street and doing something worthwhile. The sessions changed me as a person in a brilliant way.”
It wasn’t long before Kyran’s improved attitude – and coaching potential – was spotted and he was offered a role as a paid coach. He has completed his Level 1 training and is developing his skills further at the Access Sport college based at the club in Wellington. He’s coached the Wild Cats, a girls’ football team, and helps deliver the Council’s Urban Games free activities and Happy Healthy and Active Holiday clubs.
Councillor Raj Mehta (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Inclusion, Engagement, Equalities & Civic Pride said:
“Kyran is a role model for other young people. He should be so proud of his involvement in this programme. He’s excelling at football coaching and encouraging other players to feel part of a team.
“Telford Kicks is a brilliant example of how engaging young people in positive activity can help them achieve their goals in life.
“Since launching three years ago, more than 200 children now participate in our free sessions across the borough. I’m delighted our Building Safer and Stronger Communities programme is reaching so many young residents.”
Councillor Ian Preece (Lab), and AFC Telford United Foundation Director said:
“Through Telford Kicks we have created a space where young people are given the opportunity to thrive.
“Kyran is a perfect example. Not only has he improved his skills and behaviour but now he’s giving back and helping other young people find their path.
“We’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone – no matter what their background – feels included and has the chance to succeed.
“This wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of Building Safer and Stronger Communities.”
Kyran added:
“I am buzzing. I just can’t believe that a year ago I was taking part in the sessions and now I’m coaching them.
“Eventually I want to become a P.E teacher and share my story with other kids.”
As to who he supports, he joked: “I’m a Telford United fan, of course, but also a Peterborough fan, although there aren’t many of us!”
Telford Kicks runs at venues around the borough and there is no need to book.
