Telford and Wrekin show support for Armed Forces community
Telford & Wrekin Council has marked the start of Armed Forces Week by raising the Armed Forces Flag at Southwater Square today (Monday 22 June), demonstrating its continued support for serving personnel, veterans and their families across the Borough.
The flag flying ceremony takes place ahead of National Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June, a nationwide opportunity to recognise the contribution of the armed forces community.
Home to more than 16,000 serving personnel, veterans and their families, Telford & Wrekin has long-standing links to the military. The council formalised its commitment by signing the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012, helping ensure that those who serve or have served are treated fairly.
As part of local celebrations, residents are invited to attend the free Armed Forces Family Fun Day at Broadoaks Playing Field in Donnington on Sunday 28 June from 11am until 5pm. The event will feature a range of family-friendly activities, entertainment and live performances.
Councillor Paul Davis, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Local Pride & Veterans, said: “Armed Forces Day is an important moment for us to recognise and celebrate the contribution of our armed forces community here in Telford and Wrekin.
“Flying the flag is a simple but powerful way of showing our appreciation for those who serve, as well as veterans and their families who are part of communities right across the Borough.
“We’re proud to support it again this year and look forward to welcoming residents to our free family fun day in Donnington on Sunday 28 June to celebrate together.”
During the fortnight surrounding Armed Forces Day, the Council is also holding a series of free ‘Salute their Service’ military history walks and talks for veterans and their families, all followed by a celebratory afternoon tea. Find out more.
In addition, the Council’s Armed Forces Outreach team will be in Telford Town Centre on Tuesday 23 June (9am to 6pm), offering support, advice and information for serving personnel, veterans and their families, and highlighting the wide range of activities and services available locally.
A Freedom of the Borough parade is also planned for Saturday 27 June at 10am in Southwater Square hosted by the Royal Yeomanry.
The council continues to work closely with partners to support the armed forces community year-round, including through employment support, community initiatives and commemorative events.
