Summer of sport inspires packed programme of activities for young people (1)

While the world’s eyes are on the UEFA Women’s Euro, Wimbledon, and the Rugby World Cup, Telford & Wrekin Council is bringing the summer sporting season home - with a line-up of local activities for children and young people across the borough.

Kicking off on Monday (Monday 21 July), the Urban Games programme returns with its programme of over 200 free sessions for all ages, offering everything from football, netball and hockey to table tennis, BMX and even wrestling – all run by professional coaches.

There’s never been a better time to get involved. Set in community spaces - playgrounds, sports courts, and greenspaces - the sessions are all free and led by trained activity leaders, offering young people the chance to try something new and be part of a local sporting community.

And it’s not just for teens. Families with younger children can dive into nature-themed fun with Shropshire Wildlife Trust, who are running outdoor sessions filled with hands-on learning, games and exploration.

Low-cost family fun is also on offer through council-run venues, with activities starting at just £2. Think swimming pool fun and floats, tobogganing at the ski centre, and mini donuts for tots. There’s also tennis, golf, and the ever-popular Southwater attractions - Green Flag parkland, the ice rink and aerial adventure high ropes free fall and climbing wall.

Councillor Paul Davis (Lab) Cabinet Member for Communities & Civic Pride said: “This summer is all about inspiration. From the courts of Wimbledon to the stadiums of Switzerland, sport is showing us what’s possible through taking part and community spirit. Here in Telford and Wrekin, we want every young person to feel they can be part of that.

“Whether your child dreams of becoming a Lioness or just wants to make new friends, the Urban Games are a fun, free and welcoming way to get involved.”
