The transfer represents an important milestone for one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations, ensuring these treasured sites continue to be cared for and enjoyed by residents and visitors for generations to come.

Earlier this week, representatives from Telford & Wrekin Council joined colleagues from the National Trust at a thank you event to recognise the collaborative work that has supported the transfer. A further event also took place to formally acknowledge the handover and thank those involved in making the transition a success.

Throughout the process, Telford & Wrekin Council has worked closely with the National Trust, the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and partners to support a smooth transition.

Councillor Angela McClements, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture and the Arts at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “This is an important milestone for Ironbridge and we’re pleased to see the successful transition to the National Trust.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has worked so hard behind the scenes to support the transfer. It has been a genuine partnership effort and reflects the shared commitment of everyone involved to protecting and celebrating Ironbridge’s internationally significant heritage.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the National Trust and our partners to ensure Ironbridge Gorge remains a thriving destination for residents, visitors and future generations.”

Hilary McGrady, National Trust Director-General said: 'I'm so pleased that the National Trust has taken on the extraordinary Ironbridge Gorge. Following our opening in May, it is wonderful to see so many people already enjoying this iconic heritage site and feeling inspired by the interesting stories it has to tell, and the thought that has gone into making it as welcoming and as joyful as possible.

Thank you to everyone for their patience and hard work, especially the volunteers and staff from the National Trust and our partner organisations who have come together to make this transfer of ownership both possible and such a success. I am excited about where the Trust can take the site next.'

Mark Agnew, Project Director at National Trust also praised the support received from Telford & Wrekin Council during the transition, recognising the positive partnership that has helped deliver a successful handover.

The successful transfer marks the beginning of a new chapter for the sites, with Telford & Wrekin Council continuing to work alongside partners to support the long-term success of Ironbridge Gorge as a world-renowned heritage destination.
