School Litter Picking Winners Receive their Awards
Pupils from two schools that won Telford & Wrekin Council’s litter picking competition earlier this year have received their certificates and awards at special presentations held at their schools.
Newdale Primary School secured first place in the primary school’s category, while Burton Borough School won the secondary school category and was named the overall winner.
The competition formed part of the Great British Spring Clean campaign, delivered in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy in March 2026.
Councillor Paul Davis, Cabinet Member for Strong Communities, Local Pride and Veterans, presented the awards to pupils alongside staff and headteachers, recognising their efforts to improve their local environment.
Now in its third year, the competition continues to play a key role in the Council’s support for the national campaign, encouraging residents of all ages to take pride in their local area.
This year’s campaign saw 60 bags of litter collected by 8 schools across the Borough. Newdale Primary collected an impressive 12 bags and Burton Borough collected 17 earning them the title of overall winner.
Councillor Davis said:
“I want to personally thank the pupils and staff at Newdale Primary and Burton Borough, along with all the schools that took part in this year’s litter picking competition.
“It is reassuring to know that younger generations understand the importance of protecting their environment and take pride in the communities they live in.
“By getting involved, pupils are developing practical life skills and reinforcing values that I hope they take with them through their lives.
“Their efforts show how small, positive actions can make a real difference, and how empowering young people is key to creating cleaner, greener communities for generations to come.
“We hope their enthusiasm will inspire others to get involved and help grow our network of Street Champions across the Borough.”
During the presentations, both schools were recognised for their enthusiasm, teamwork and strong sense of community pride. Pupils shared reflections on their experiences, spoke about what they had learned, and suggested ideas for future initiatives. They were also encouraged to continue their involvement by taking home information about the Street Champions scheme to share with their families and wider communities.
Telford & Wrekin Council is encouraging more residents to sign up as Street Champions. Volunteers receive support, equipment and regular updates to help tackle environmental issues in their local area.
