Record number of Green Flags granted to Telford’s green spaces
A record seven green spaces across Telford and Wrekin have been granted Green Flag status, in news announced today.
This year, the borough’s six existing Green Flag sites were joined by Dothill and Shawbirch Local Nature Reserve, which received Green Flag recognition for the first time, creating a record seven accredited sites in Telford and Wrekin.
Dothill and Shawbirch Local Nature Reserve joins Telford Town Park, Bowring Park, Apley Woods Local Nature Reserve, Hartshill Park, Dale End Park and Dawley Park which all retained their status again this year.
The prestigious Green Flag accreditation is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, and is testament to the hard work and dedication of the council staff, volunteers and ‘Friends Of’ groups that care for these spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Announcing the Green Flag award for Dothill and Shawbirch Local Nature Reserve, judges said:
“The site is an excellent green and blue space tucked away within housing areas where the local community cherish it. Congratulations on being awarded the Green Flag. The hard work of everyone involved is evident, you have a site to be proud of.”
Councillor Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Action, the Environment, Heritage and Visitor Economy, said:
“It is fantastic news that Dothill and Shawbirch Local Nature Reserve has received Green Flag recognition. To have a record seven Green Flag accredited sites in the borough this year is fantastic, and testament to all the hard work that council teams, contractors, volunteers and Friends Of groups put in to our parks and green spaces.
“We know how important green spaces like these are; they provide vital habitats for wildlife and encourage biodiversity, as well as being hugely beneficial for the wellbeing of all who visit and volunteer. That’s why we continue to invest in improving and maintaining them, supported by volunteers across the borough.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE added:
“I would like to congratulate everyone involved on achieving Green Flag Awards.
“These are vital green spaces for the community in Telford and Wrekin, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. Staff and volunteers do so much to ensure that they maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
