Push for support – launching Orange Button
Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to announce the launch of the Orange Button scheme, a crucial initiative aimed at fostering a community of support for those experiencing suicidal thoughts or concerned about the mental wellbeing of others. This national scheme, now being implemented locally, is set to coincide with the lead-up to World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September.
Orange Button wearers are easily identifiable members of the community who have the confidence to openly discuss suicide, providing a listening ear without judgment. They can inform individuals where to find help and support, though they are not a substitute for professional counselling or therapy.
The Orange Button scheme is built on three core aims:
- Creating a community of skilled individuals. Participants receive quality assured training in suicide awareness, equipping them with the skills to assist those in need.
- Building a network of supportive organisations. Orange Button wearers are prepared to listen and direct individuals to appropriate support resources.
- Raising community awareness. Ensuring all community members understand the significance of the Orange Button and how to engage with the scheme.
Councillor Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Healthier Communities, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative:
“The Orange Button scheme is a vital step forward in our commitment to supporting mental health within our community.
“By training individuals to recognise and respond to signs of distress, we are creating a network of empathy and support.
“We urge individuals and local businesses to step forward and be a beacon of hope for those in need.”
The Council invites both individuals and businesses in Telford and Wrekin to join this vital initiative. Wearing an Orange Button is a powerful way to show solidarity and provide essential support to those who may be suffering in silence.
