Powering up public transport: Telford’s first electric bus hits the road
Telford & Wrekin Council has begun a two-week trial of an electric bus and is testing its performance on selected Travel Telford routes.
The Enviro100EV is a compact, zero-emission midibus for urban and rural environments. With a capacity of up to 45 passengers and a range of 356 miles, the bus offers efficient travel and marks a step forward in the Council’s commitment to delivering cleaner, more sustainable public transport across the borough.
Councillor Ollie Vickers, Cabinet Member for the Economy and Transport, said: “This trial is an exciting opportunity to explore how electric buses can support our goals for greener, more flexible public transport. We’re committed to investing in innovation that benefits both our communities and the environment."
The demonstrator will operate across various Travel Telford routes to gather feedback from drivers, passengers, and operators, helping inform future investment decisions.
If the trial proves successful, the Council plans to purchase an electric bus within this financial year using funding from the UK Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP): Local Transport Authority Allocations.
This national funding stream supports local authorities in delivering enhancements proposed in their BSIP submissions, developed under the Government’s National Bus Strategy. Telford & Wrekin Council updated its BSIP earlier this year to reflect local priorities and ambitions for better bus services.
