Planning submitted for new padel courts at Telford Tennis Centre
We Do Tennis, the long‑term partner of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Leisure Service, has submitted a planning application to create new covered outdoor padel courts at Telford Tennis Centre, marking a key milestone in bringing one of Europe’s fastest‑growing sports to the Borough.
The application progresses the ambitions set out in last year’s partnership announcement, which included major investment plans by We Do Tennis to introduce padel to the centre as part of a wider programme of facility improvements and participation growth.
We Do Tennis has a strong track record of growing participation at Telford Tennis Centre and across the Borough, including outreach in schools, parks and community settings. The introduction of padel forms a significant part of their future plans and will help broaden the centre’s appeal to new and existing players of all ages.
If approved, the development will include:
- 2 new covered doubles courts and 1 un-covered singles padel court, providing year‑round play
- Supporting facilities, including space for retail, viewing area, changing rooms and a café offer
- Improved outdoor areas, designed to enhance accessibility and user experience
Padel continues to surge in popularity across Europe thanks to its sociable, fast‑paced and accessible style of play. Bringing this growing sport to Telford will provide new opportunities for both existing court users and people trying racket sports for the first time.
Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture and the Arts, said: “It’s fantastic to see We Do Tennis take this next step by submitting the planning application for new padel courts. This represents real momentum in expanding the offer at Telford Tennis Centre and giving our residents even more ways to get active.
Subject to planning approval, these new facilities will deliver a fresh, exciting sporting experience and further strengthen the already successful partnership between the Council and We Do Tennis.”
Nigel Hunter, Co‑Director of We Do Tennis, said: “Submitting the planning application is a really exciting step for us. Padel is growing at an incredible pace and we’re passionate about bringing this vibrant, sociable sport to Telford. These new courts will allow people of all ages and abilities to try something fresh, stay active and enjoy a brilliant atmosphere. We’re proud to be investing in Telford Tennis Centre and look forward to progressing our plans.”
