The unveiling of a transformed overgrown pond took place today (Tuesday, 1 October) at John Fletcher Primary School in Madeley, Telford.

The new learning, art, science and mindfulness area has been brought to life through a huge community effort, supported by Telford & Wrekin Council and its highways contractor, Balfour Beatty Living Places’ social value scheme.

The scheme is a way of adding value beyond money to communities and bought together community groups including the Ironbridge Meadows Group who helped clear the site, MSM who provided resource and EnviroGrant who contributed £1,000 of grant funding.

E H Smith Charitable Trust also donated building materials for erecting sleepers, decking, foundations and landscaping for the whole area and Dobbies Garden Centres also donated an array of plants and flowers.

Even the school caretaker John Harvey, lent a hand.

Science subject lead at John Fletcher School Darren Baker said: “The plan was to develop the massively overgrown pond to create a space that enhances their learning outside of the classroom.

“The new facilities have created fantastic opportunities for art, mindfulness, as well as personal, social and health education – they can even just relax, read a book and think or have some food.

“Having this space brings some special experiences to our teaching such as working as team, using tools that they would not normally use, decision making and producing a food source for other people to benefit from.

“On behalf of the school and all our pupils, thank you for helping us create this wonderful place that will benefit pupils for years to come.”

The Veolia Telford & Wrekin EnviroGrant is currently open for applications.
