On board for a better borough: Council confirms improvements to its bus services

Telford & Wrekin Council is set to unveil a raft of improvements to its bus services, marking a step forward in its commitment to delivering reliable, accessible, and user-friendly public transport.

Published on: 11 July 2025

These enhancements will redefine the timetables and how residents and visitors access the services following a detailed review of resident feedback. The changes reflect the changes that matter most to passengers and deliverable within budgetary restraints.

The changes are the result of hundreds of conversations and reflect a shared ambition to build a bus network that works for everyone.

From 21 July, the Council will roll out a series of service enhancements across the network, including:

  • More frequent buses on key routes
  • Improved early evening and weekend coverage
  • Better access to timetable information
  • Clearer and more accessible services
  • Same great £2 fare

The changes are designed to make every day travel simpler, more dependable, and better suited to the needs of residents - whether commuting to work, attending medical appointments, or enjoying a day out.

Nearly 60 per cent of respondents praised the reliability, cleanliness, and professionalism of drivers on council-run routes such as the 100, 101, and 99a/99c. Many described the service as a lifeline - especially for older and disabled residents who rely on it to stay independent and connected.

At the same time, residents highlighted areas for improvement, including infrequent services, overcrowding at peak times, and limited evening options. This feedback has directly shaped the changes being introduced.

As part of routine maintenance and contract renewal, buses will also receive a refreshed new look. This practical update will ensure council-operated buses are easy to spot, well-maintained, and aligned with the borough’s commitment to affordable travel.

The new design will help passengers quickly identify the council-run services, which continue to offer the lowest single fare in the Midlands - just £2 per journey. The updated buses are set to begin appearing in August. Until then, passengers may see a mix of vehicle appearances as the transition takes place.

Councillor Ollie Vickers, (Lab) Cabinet Member for the Economy & Transport said: “We’re proud of the work our teams have done to listen to residents and act on what they’ve told us.

“These changes are about making everyday journeys easier, more reliable, and better value for money. Our council-run buses are already carrying over 600,000 journeys - and we’re just getting started.

This is a big step forward for public transport in Telford and Wrekin, and we’re excited to share even more improvements in the weeks ahead.”

Telford & Wrekin Council is one of the few councils in the country that operates its own bus services, investing to keep communities connected while calling on the Government and partners for long-term support.

With limited funding, Councillor Vickers added: “It's a difficult balancing act to protect and develop vital routes.

Telford & Wrekin Council is committed to a wide range of investments and maintaining valued front-line services, whilst continuing to charge the lowest rates of Council Tax in the Midlands.

Further announcements will follow as part of a phased campaign to outline specific service enhancements and updated timetables and route information.
