New SEND hub for Newport CE Junior School
A school bungalow has been converted to provide a dedicated space for children with special educational needs at a primary school in the borough.
The building, which was once the caretaker’s house and more recently used as a kitchen and meeting space, is on the grounds of Newport CE Junior School and has provided the perfect space for the school’s new SEND hub.
Its refurbishment has taken place over the last six months and it was ready to welcome students when they returned to school after the summer break.
The building has provided one additional classroom, a sensory room, kitchen and a new play area has been created outside, all delivered with funding from Telford & Wrekin Council’s school expansion programme.
The capacity of the provision will allow up to ten children to access full time education within their own local community.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:
“Through our school expansion programme, we are providing hundreds of new school places across the Borough.
“The conversion of the bungalow into the new SEND hub is a welcome addition to the school and I’m pleased it will be able to support children in a dedicated environment, with the benefits of being in a mainstream school setting.
“The hub will be a space where every pupil is seen, supported and empowered, where individual needs are met with understanding and where learners can thrive."
Nicola Moody, Headteacher at Newport CE Junior School:
‘We are delighted to have opened a SEND Hub this September. We pride ourselves on being truly inclusive and to have this provision within our school community genuinely enables us to live that vision. The facility is exceptional, and the staff and children are already flourishing.”
Andy Pryce, Managing Director at Pryce Builders, said:
"Delivering the new SEND Hub at Newport Junior School has been a truly rewarding experience. While every project comes with its unique set of challenges and adjustments, collaborating with the school and the Council has made the process smooth and enjoyable throughout.
“As the contractor, it’s incredibly fulfilling to now see the children and staff making the most of the new space – a space designed to support and inspire.”
The restoration has seen roof improvements, new windows and doors, electrical upgrades, improved ventilation, heating and water systems as well as new flooring and full decoration throughout.
