New College Wellington development completed as first residents settle in

The major transformation of the former New College site in Wellington has reached another important milestone with the completion of Housing Plus Group’s affordable units creating a vibrant new residential community in the heart of the town.

The development has delivered 76 high‑quality Housing Plus Group apartments and bungalows for older people, alongside 20 new rental homes for Nuplace – Telford & Wrekin Council’s wholly owned housing company.

Council leader Lee Carter recently visited the completed Barnes Court development for a tour, where he met partners and some of the first residents settling into their new homes.

Barnes Court, which forms Housing Plus Group’s part of the development, provides a mix of one‑ and two‑bedroom self‑contained retirement living apartments and bungalows.

Designed to support older people to live independently, the homes include welcoming communal lounges, landscaped gardens, onsite facilities and electric vehicle charging.

The project forms part of a wider regeneration programme led by Telford & Wrekin Council in partnership with Housing Plus Group and Nuplace, following the Council’s acquisition of the former New College site in 2019.

Homes England funding enabled the delivery of the affordable homes now completed on the site.

Paula Reynolds, Director of Supported Housing at Housing Plus Group, said:

“We are incredibly proud to see residents now moving into their new homes. This development provides high‑quality, affordable housing designed to support older people to live well and independently.

“It’s a wonderful moment to see this community come to life and to know these homes will make a meaningful difference for years to come.”

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council Leader, said:

“It’s fantastic to see the New College site fully regenerated. This once-stalled site has now become a high-quality development that offers homes for all generations and new community facilities that local people can benefit from straight away.”

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Highways and Enforcement, said:

“We’re proud to have worked with our partners to bring this important site back into use. With residents now settling into their new Nuplace and Housing Plus Group homes, this development is already making a positive impact across the Borough.”
