Designed as a community hub for both education and community sport, the pitch will be used by pupils during the school day and will also be available to local football and rugby clubs, as well as residents, during evenings and weekends.

The facility marks a £1.55 million investment has been joint funded and delivered in partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council, The Premier League, The FA, the Government’s Football Foundation, The Learning Community Trust, and other local organisations.

A key focus is to widen access for boys’ and girls’ teams, along with disability provision, and increase opportunities for recreational football.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said: “It was a pleasure to join partners and local stakeholders to officially open this fantastic new facility at Burton Borough School.

“It will provide high-quality opportunities for young people to be active, build confidence and enjoy sport, while also being a valuable resource for the wider community.

“This investment reflects our commitment to protect, care and invest in our communities by bringing people together and helping everyone lead healthier, more active lives.”

Caroline Bedford, Principal at Burton Borough School, said: “This is a fantastic investment in our students, giving them access to a high‑quality, all‑weather facility that will inspire even greater participation, confidence and ambition in sport.

“Just as importantly, this pitch will be a real asset for the wider Newport community. Local clubs, teams and families will be able to benefit from a safe, modern space to train and play all year round.

“We’re incredibly proud to have helped create a resource that brings people together and supports healthier, more active lives.”

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners - the Premier League, The FA and Government - to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country.

“Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.

“We’re delighted that the local community in Newport will now be able to enjoy all these benefits thanks to the new facilities at Burton Borough School.”
