Manufacturer support gives children a taste of the great outdoors
A Shropshire based manufacturer is giving children a taste of the great outdoors thanks to a generous donation.
Netherton Foundry, based in Cleobury Mortimer, has donated outdoor cooking equipment to Arthog Outdoor Education Centre in North Wales.
The centre, owned and operated by Telford & Wrekin Council, is nestled on the edge of the Welsh Coast and has been offering immersive learning experiences for the more than 60 years.
Its residential programmes have helped thousands of children build confidence, resilience and teamwork through hands on activities such a rock climbing, paddle sports, gorge walking, orienteering, surfing and much more.
Netherton Foundry, known for its high-quality spun iron cooking equipment, produced using locally produced sourced materials, has donated spun iron pans and a barbeque grid to support Arthog and create new learning opportunities for children to cook in the great outdoors.
Owners of Netherton Foundry, Neil and Sue have also provided sponsorship to support pupils from a Shropshire based secondary school, helping children from families facing financial challenges to attend a residential stay at Arthog.
The benefits of such experiences are well-evidenced. Research consistently shows that outdoor learning boosts physical health, while also supporting mental wellbeing by reducing stress and improving focus. Time outdoors can also help children develop confidence, resilience and social skills.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Education and Skills, said:
“For generations of young people from Telford and Wrekin and neighbouring Shropshire, the rugged Welsh coastline has provided a place of challenge, discovery and growth. And now, thanks to the generosity of Netherton Foundry, even more children are getting the chance to experience it for themselves.
“If other businesses would like to follow in the footsteps of the manufacturer, while fulfilling their own social value goals, there are a range of sponsorship opportunities available. Even small contributions can open the door to experiences that shape futures and create lasting memories.”
Neil Currie from Netherton Foundry, said:
“We are firm believers in the importance of outdoor education and its significant and positive impact on young people. We are very proud to have supported this initiative to help more young people benefit from the experience of attending the brilliant Arthog Outdoor Education Centre and hope others will follow our example.”
