Making a splash at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre

Since reopening just over two weeks ago the refurbished Wellington Swimming Pool has had over 2,500 swims including over 500 free swims from children and young people. The re-opening of the swimming pool has also attracted 180 new gym memberships and more than 200 children have signed up to the weekly swimming lesson programme which now has over 1,000 children registered on its weekly Swim4Life programme.

The significant refurbishment project focused on modernising the building’s infrastructure to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, supporting Telford & Wrekin Council’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The pool reopened on Tuesday 26 August.

Members and visitors have been flocking back and have said how much they like the new work and are pleased to be back swimming in the pool. Children’s swimming lessons have also been moved back to the centre with the new term of lessons underway as well as the popular aquafit classes.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said:

“It is fantastic to see the pool being used again, to see people of all ages and abilities in the pool from 6.30am right through to 10pm. With over 2500 swim sessions having already taken place we look forward to a busy year ahead at the site and with Wellington swimming pool being back at the heart of the community.”

Councillor Angela McClements, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture & the Arts said:

“Swimming is a fantastic life skill and it’s great to hear that more than 200 children have signed up to the weekly swimming lesson programme which now has over 1,000 children registered on its Swim4Life programme.  Not only does it help your child enjoy the water, but it can also help prevent drowning and encourage a healthy lifestyle.”

The Swim4Life swimming lesson programme is split into seven stages helping children develop from a non-swimmer into a confident and capable swim enthusiast.
