From today (Monday, February 2) applicants are encouraged to apply to Telford & Wrekin Council’s Make a Change project and use it as a platform to raise awareness for something they feel passionate about.

Demonstrating the Council’s commitments, funding has also been increased this year from £2,000 up to £3,000, helping young people turn great ideas into real projects that make a lasting difference to the community.

In this round, organisers are particularly calling for applications in areas such as St George’s, Oakengates, Wellington, Lawley, which have never submitted applications. Also sports groups, cubs, scouts, girl guides and other youth and community groups as well as community groups across the borough.

Launched in 2023, Make a Change is a council-run initiative that gives young people aged 11–18 the opportunity to design and deliver projects that improve health, wellbeing, or the environment in their communities.

Since its launch, the competition has supported 19 projects that have made a real difference across the borough. From cookery classes providing meals for vulnerable residents to environmental festivals and well-being weeks, these initiatives have united generations, built confidence, and strengthened community connections.

One member from the ‘Stop the clock’ group said: “I love this project, helped me get out more, helped me develop my communication skills. I like finding out all the stories the residents at the home have to tell, and what interest them and its similar to what interest me too.

Winning teams previously have attended an awards evening, some of the ideas included:

  • Flavour Town taught children to cook dishes from around the world and donated meals to homeless shelters.
  • Stop the Clock encouraged young people to switch off their devices and reconnect outdoors.
  • Environmental Festival inspired children to keep their community clean and green.

Councillor Paul Davis Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride said: “Make a Change is about supporting young people to work as a team to make a positive difference in their community.

“These projects will bring generations together, encourage safer and stronger communities, and reduce social isolation.”

Previously, up to six projects could receive funding up to £2,000. Under the new model, up to four projects may receive up to £3,000 each.

Applications open today Monday, February 2 and young people are encouraged to start planning their ideas now. Applications will close Friday, May 1.
