As the first school in Shropshire to receive the Plastic Free Schools accreditation from Surfers Against Sewage, Hollinswood Primary has long been a pioneer in environmental education.

This July, the school is building on that legacy by supporting Plastic Free July and setting an example for others to follow.

Highlights of the school’s Plastic Free July efforts include:

  • Litter picking the school grounds and auditing the waste found, before separating it out for recycling.
  • Student-led plastic audits conducted by Year 5 pupils to identify and reduce single-use plastics across the school.
  • Reusable alternatives such as washable lunch bags, reusable cutlery, and refillable water bottles provided to students.
  • Eco Committee initiatives that encourage litter picking, recycling, and composting, helping to instil lifelong habits of environmental responsibility.
  • Educational assemblies and workshops to raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution and the importance of sustainable choices.

Susanne Bearblock, Sustainability and Eco Committee Lead at Hollinswood Primary and Nursery School, said:

"Our children are passionate about protecting the planet. Plastic Free July gives them a real opportunity to lead change within their school and community. It’s about empowering them to see that their actions matter."

Councillor Carolyn Healy, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability, said:

"Hollinswood Primary is a shining example of what can be achieved when a school community comes together with purpose. Their commitment to reducing plastic waste and educating the next generation is truly inspiring.

“What’s especially powerful is how they show that even small changes—like swapping cling film for reusable wraps or choosing refillable bottles—can add up to a big difference when we all take part. I hope residents, schools and organisations across Telford and Wrekin will follow their example and take action to protect our environment."

In supporting the Plastic Free July campaign, Telford & Wrekin Council is encouraging residents, schools, and businesses to reduce plastic waste and adopt more sustainable habits. The Council is also working with local manufacturers and lobbying national producers to reduce plastic packaging and promote sustainable alternatives.
