Green Light for M54–M6 Link Road: A Major Boost for Telford and the Midlands
Thousands of drivers across Telford and the wider Midlands are set to benefit from faster, more reliable journeys as the Government today confirmed the go-ahead for the long-awaited M54–M6 Link Road - unlocking economic growth, easing congestion, and connecting communities across the region.
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “This is a landmark moment for Telford and Wrekin. I have long advocated for the M54-M6 Link Road, fully recognising the vital importance of this connection to the prosperity and connectivity of our borough.
“Telford is one of the fastest-growing towns in the Midlands, home to major employers and thousands of daily commuters. This new link will cut journey times and unlock access to jobs - not just in Telford, but across the wider region.
“This important link is about making life easier for working people, attracting new investment, and ensuring Telford remains a key player in the Midlands economy.
"Seeing this connection move forward is a significant and welcome step for our community.”
The new link will provide a direct route between the M54 and M6 northbound, cutting journey times, improving access to major employment hubs and the new Strategic Rail Freight Interchange at Four Ashes.
The scheme is expected to generate between £555 million and £634 million in economic benefits, supporting growth in key towns and cities across the region including Telford and Wrekin, it could also remove 19,000 vehicles a day from local roads
The £200m project to build a link between the M6 at Laney Green in Staffordshire and Junction 1 at Featherstone is expected to increase capacity, reduce journey times, and better connect Telford to Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, and the rest of the country.
The project had been under review, but the Department for Transport today announced it will go ahead. The project fits the Government’s agenda of investing in infrastructure to boost connectivity and generate economic growth in all regions of the country.
This project is also backed by Shaun Davies MP, who recognises the strategic importance of strengthening regional connectivity and unlocking economic growth across Telford and the wider Midlands.
