Game on! Telford & Wrekin Council unveils packed programme of free and low-cost activities for young people this half-term

From sports and nature trails to creative clubs and holiday fun, young people across Telford and Wrekin are in for a treat with a wide range of free and inclusive activities this October half-term and beyond.

Whether it’s trying something new, getting active, making friends, or building confidence, Telford & Wrekin Council’s expanding youth offer is designed to support children and teens in every aspect of their lives – from health and wellbeing to education, employment, arts and community involvement.

One of the highlights this half-term is the return of Urban Games – a vibrant programme of free sports and outdoor activities for children and young people up to age 16. Held in parks, playgrounds and green spaces across the Borough, Urban Games offers everything from football, netball and hockey to BMX, wrestling, climbing walls and even free fall at Aerial Adventure.

Led by professional coaches including 4 All Foundation, the sessions are open to all – no booking or fancy kit required. Just turn up and join in.

For younger children, Wild Telford sessions run by Shropshire Wildlife Trust offer nature-themed fun, trails and treasure hunts for babies and toddlers. And for budding cyclists, Dr Bike will be at Telford Bike Hub offering free bike repairs and safety checks.

Councillor Paul Davis, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride said:

“Urban Games is all about giving young people the chance to get active, try new things, and feel part of their community.

“As a cornerstone of Telford & Wrekin Council’s expanding youth offer, it plays a key role in connecting young people with free, inclusive opportunities. We’re proud to see our parks and public spaces buzzing with energy, laughter, and a real sense of belonging.”

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:

"We are committed to supporting our young people to build confidence, discover opportunities, and grow and thrive. The Council’s 10 by 10 initiative, for example, encourages children to try 10 enriching experiences before the age of 10.

“Taking part in free sports through the Urban Games is one of those experiences, so I encourage parents and carers to bring their children to an activity over half-term and sign up to 10 by 10 at the same time.”

Urban Games is funded through the Council’s Building Safer and Stronger Communities initiative, in partnership with the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, and part-funded by government levelling up support.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said:

“Urban Games not only offers fun and adventure but also helps young people develop new skills and build lasting friendships.

“I’m proud of the diverse and inclusive communities we have in Telford and Wrekin and through this partnership with the Council, I remain committed to supporting initiatives that bring people together and strengthen community bonds.”
