Further works are restoring local wildlife habitat

Latest works include the removal of invading willow to bring the rest of Muxton Marsh at Granville Country Park Local Nature Reserve into good condition.

Telford & Wrekin Council is passionate about preserving Muxton Marsh and this project was initially funded by the Council with a £30,000 investment along with a further £9,000 from Severn Trent Water in 2023.

Severn Trent Water have now provided an additional £10,000 over the next five years which is being used to continue removing invading willow.

Specialist wetland habitat contractors brought in by the Council are using machinery which has wide tracks to minimise impact and is specially designed for sensitive environments such as Muxton Marsh.

Muxton Marsh is a Site of Special Scientific Interest lying within Granville Local Nature Reserve and It was given protected status in 1987 for its mixture of wildflower grassland, marshy fen and wet woodland.

Over the years the marshland has struggled because of the invasion of willow which has dried out the fen and threatened the habitats of plants and animals that live there.

Councillor Carolyn Healy, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability, said:

“Muxton Marsh is the jewel in the crown of Granville Local Nature Reserve and home to valuable wildlife habitats.

“This work is effectively a continuation of the works which began three years ago to bring the rest of the fen into good condition and maintain its national importance.

“We are committed to protecting and improving sites like Muxton Marsh and this further conservation work will enhance the wetland, benefiting plants and animals for decades to come and ensuring that visitors will still be able to enjoy the area.”
