Free activities on your doorstep this half-term
Families across Telford and Wrekin can enjoy a wide range of free activities close to home this May half-term, as the popular Urban Games programme returns.
Running from Monday 26 May to Friday 30 May, the programme offers a variety of sports and outdoor activities taking place in local parks, MUGAs and community spaces across the borough, including sessions in and around Brookside, Sutton Hill and neighbouring areas.
With the cost of living continuing to put pressure on household budgets, the Urban Games are designed to provide accessible free activities for children and young people aged 0–16, without the need to travel far or pay to take part.
A full programme of daily sessions will be delivered by qualified coaches and local partners, offering activities such as football, cricket, hockey, cycling and BMX, alongside a range of informal games and skills sessions suitable for all abilities.
Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement, said: “We know school holidays can be a difficult time for families, especially with the pressures many are facing at the moment. Programmes like this are about supporting our communities with free, local activities that bring people together and give young people safe, positive things to do.”
All sessions are free to attend and operate on a drop-in basis, meaning there is no need to book in advance.
A key highlight of the week will take place at Telford Town Park on Wednesday 28 May, where young people will have the opportunity to try the aerial adventure high ropes course, including a climbing wall and free-fall experience.
Younger children and families can also take part in Wild Telford sessions, delivered in partnership with the Shropshire Wildlife Trust. These sessions will be held at locations including the Wrekin, Apley Woods and Randlay Valley, offering nature-based activities such as trails and outdoor play.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said: “Urban Games is about giving young people the chance to stay active, try new things and build confidence outside the classroom. It supports their wellbeing as well as their development, while making sure opportunities are open to everyone, whatever their background.”
The programme aims to support families during the school holidays by providing safe, local opportunities for children and young people to stay active, try new experiences and spend time outdoors.
