Fossil festival helps families tick off 10 by 10 activity
Families across the borough are being encouraged to get out and about and complete activities as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s 10 by 10 initiative.
Designed to encourage children to try ten new experiences by the age of ten, the scheme includes activities such as visiting museums, galleries and heritage sites, using a library and learning to ride a bike.
One of the best ways to tick off the “experience a museum” activity is by visiting the Telford Natural History Museum at Exotic Zoo in Telford Town Park, which recently welcomed families to its renowned annual Fossil Festival.
The popular event brought prehistoric discovery to life with hands-on activities, family entertainment and leading fossil experts sharing their knowledge with visitors.
Families had the chance to see the unveiling of a brand-new Jurassic dinosaur, explore a working fossil preparation lab and view impressive fossil displays from millions of years ago.
The festival gave children a fun and interactive way to learn more about history, science and the natural world while completing one of the 10 by 10 challenges.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and skills, said:
“It was great to see families enjoying the fossil festival this weekend and ticking off one of our 10 by 10 activities in the process. The '10 by 10' initiative is about more than just ticking off a list of activities; it's about fostering a sense of curiosity, confidence, and community in our children.
“10 by 10 is all about encouraging children to try new life-enriching activities, which we believe will help them build confidence through exploration and play.
“These experiences are crucial in helping children develop essential life skills and broaden their horizons. We are committed to ensuring that every child in Telford and Wrekin has the opportunity to participate in these enriching activities."
Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure said:
“The Telford Fossil Festival marked a really special moment for the Borough, bringing together discovery and imagination in the heart of our community. Held at Telford Exotic Zoo, home to Telford History Museum, alongside the unveiling of a new Jurassic dinosaur specimen, it added something truly distinctive to our visitor offer, helping to position Telford as a place where families can enjoy great days out while learning, exploring and being inspired.”
