Footbridge to close for essential repairs that will protect it for generations to come
Jackfield & Coalport Memorial Footbridge will close for five weeks while essential refurbishment works take place to protect the historic structure for future generations
The project will see the bridge's ageing timber deck replaced with a new fibre-reinforced plastic surface, designed with a timber-effect finish to preserve its traditional appearance while offering far greater durability and lower future maintenance needs.
Spanning the River Severn between Jackfield and Coalport, the bridge is a vital link for residents, walkers and visitors, connecting communities on both sides of the river and forming part of the wider leisure and tourism network within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.
The works form part of Telford & Wrekin Council's ongoing investment in the Borough's key infrastructure and its commitment to protecting significant heritage assets.
Councillor Carolyn Healy, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability, said: "I've been calling for investment in Jackfield & Coalport Memorial Footbridge since 2019, because it is so much more than a river crossing.
"It's a vital connection between the communities of Jackfield and Coalport, used daily by residents, walkers and visitors exploring the Gorge. It also holds a special place in our local history - the bridge serves as a First World War memorial and was originally funded through public subscription to provide a safer alternative to the ferry crossing that came before it.
"Preserving that heritage, while making sure the bridge stays safe and accessible for future generations, matters enormously to me. These works will help secure the future of this much-loved structure while fully respecting its historic character."
Matthew Day, Principal Bridge Engineer at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "The existing timber deck has reached the point where it needs to be replaced. Following detailed assessment and consultation through the appropriate heritage processes, we've selected a fibre-reinforced plastic deck with a timber-effect finish.
"This material offers significantly greater longevity than traditional timber, while keeping the appearance people expect in such a sensitive historic setting. It will reduce future maintenance needs and help make sure the bridge remains open for everyone to enjoy for many years to come."
The Council has secured significant external funding in recent years to support investment in transport, infrastructure and regeneration projects across the Borough - helping ensure that important community assets like Jackfield & Coalport Memorial Footbridge can continue to serve residents and visitors alike.
The bridge is currently scheduled to close from September 7 to October 9. Diversion information, including alternative routes, can be found in situ to guide pedestrians in the area. Surrounding businesses will remain open during the work.
