The ambitious redevelopment project will revitalise public spaces, creating vibrant areas that locals can take pride in, while attracting more visitors and boosting investment.

Wellington’s public spaces will be reimagined to create a more accessible, enjoyable environment for everyone – from people with mobility or sensory needs, to those who simply want to enjoy the town’s market and see what local traders have to offer.

The project, which is also supported by central government and Wellington Town Council funding, will also bring forward infrastructure upgrades to support sustainable travel, smoother footpaths, and improved parking options.

In addition to the public spaces, Telford & Wrekin Council is kicking off a major overhaul of Church Street.

The street will be widened for pedestrians, roads resurfaced and potholes repaired and equipped with all-new kerbs, drainage and in the last phase street furniture such as benches and planters.

These updates will make it safer, more pedestrian-friendly, while still accommodating vehicles and parking – bringing the street into line with the Market Street, completed in March 2023.

The first phase of work, from Station Road, Railway Bridge to Queen Street, began on January 6 and will run through the end of February.

Phase two, covering the area from Queen Street to Vineyard Road, will take place from March to May 2025.

Other exciting developments include the transformation of the former YMCA building at 1 Walker Street, which will house a new retail space on the ground floor and nine stylish apartments as part of the Nuplace rental scheme.

Wellington Orbit cinema will also undergo a major refurbishment, creating a cultural and artistic hub right in the town centre - further cementing Wellington as a destination for culture and trade.

These projects are part of the broader Investing in Telford and Wrekin programme, which is driving major changes across the borough - including the Station Quarter in Telford Town Centre and Oakengates.
