Domestic abuse is everyone’s business

Telford & Wrekin Council is working with businesses to raise awareness about domestic abuse (DA) as part of White Ribbon Day (November 25) this year.

An annual event was held today (November 25), raising awareness of the White Ribbon pledge to stand up to violence against women and girls. Telford and Wrekin Council is also inviting businesses to take up training opportunities, creating a network of support for employees experiencing domestic abuse.

Councillor Kelly Middleton, (Lab) Cabinet Member for Healthier, Safer & Stronger Communities & Partnerships said: “Instead of just talking about it, we’re doing something, I believe change starts with action. We are working with partners to ensure people understand what healthy relationships are but for those already in abusive relationships, we hope to extend the network of support through employer training.

“Nobody should lose their ability to work because of domestic abuse. It’s a serious issue that is everyone’s business. We believe in providing support to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation. By fostering awareness and encouraging training, we can build a community that stands against violence and supports all victims.

“We have already trained some of our front-line staff at leisure centres, our entire cabinet will be trained by the new year, and I am working with businesses to offer support in recognising and supporting employees too.”

Increased lateness or absenteeism, unexplained injuries, reduced quality and/or quantity of work may be signs of DA and training will enable people within workplaces to recognise the warnings. Workplaces can often be safe places away from abusers and a place where people can safely access support.

Telford and Wrekin Council’s domestic abuse service is open to all residents and offers vital resources and support. UK businesses loose over £2.7 billion a year through DA and the White Ribbon campaign this year will encourage not only awareness but also support people experiencing abuse.
