Council welcomes step-free access plan for Wellington Railway Station

The proposals include the installation of two passenger lifts and associated works to provide step-free access between platforms and Wellington Bus Station. The application has been submitted as part of Network Rail’s national Access for All programme.

The Council has for many years called for improved access at the station and has worked with Network Rail over a number of years to press for delivery. The scheme was first promised in 2018 and the Council has worked proactively with Network Rail to ensure the link to the Bus Station was featured despite it not featuring in original plans. Improving step-free access would make it easier for residents, visitors and those with mobility needs to use the station.

Wellington Railway Station sits next to Wellington Bus Station and improved accessibility would strengthen the link between rail and bus services, supporting better connections across the town.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said:

“We have consistently called for improved accessibility at Wellington Railway Station and welcome the Government taking this positive step forward after it was originally promised in 2018.

“Providing step-free access between platforms and the Bus Station would greatly improve accessibility for passengers and help ensure the station is accessible for everyone. We have been proactive with Network Rail to ensure they incorporate the direct link to the Bus Station.

“The railway station plays an important role in Wellington and improving connections between rail and bus services is vital. We look forward to seeing the scheme progress”.
