Telford & Wrekin Council has welcomed today’s (Fri) government announcement that councils will receive £1.6 billion in funding to repair roads and fix potholes.

The government wants to reverse a decade of decline on the UK’s roads and the investment will help councils fix the equivalent of 7 million extra potholes a year, saving drivers hundreds of pounds in repairs.

Telford & Wrekin Council has made great strides to tackle the borough’s potholes and remains committed to repairing them and making the borough’s roads safer and better for all residents and motorists.

Since January 2023, the Council’s crews have repaired 5,962 potholes across the borough when residents only reported 3233.

Across England, local highways authorities will also receive a £500 million uplift in funding as the government looks to rebuild Britain as part of its plan for change.

Councillor Richard Overton (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Highways and Enforcement, said:

“We welcome today’s announcement and government’s decision to plough much needed funding into fixing potholes which will help to make roads safer for residents in our borough and motorists nationally.

“As we enter the time of year when pothole are more prominent in the roads, we remain committed to repairing potholes, inspecting all those reported to us, and aim to repair the most dangerous potholes within one working day.

"This proactive approach combined with the funds to deliver creates safer roads, long-term for all our borough's residents and stakeholders.

"As ever, we encourage residents to report potholes as soon as they appear via the MyTelford App.”
