Council strengthens support for Armed Forces community
Telford & Wrekin Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant by delivering a range of innovative services and support for serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets, and their families across the borough over the past twelve months.
The Armed Forces Covenant Annual Report, which was approved by the Council’s Cabinet at their meeting today (Tuesday 6 January 2026) highlights significant progress in championing the Covenant and ensuring that those who serve, or have served, are treated with fairness and respect.
Over the past year, the Council has expanded its outreach programme, hosted popular community events, and officially opened the Christopher Turley Armed Forces Community Hub, a welcoming space offering tailored advice and activities for the Armed Forces community. Developed in partnership with Great Dawley Town Council and Telford Mind, the Hub is already proving a lifeline for many, with specialist drop-in sessions planned for early 2026.
The Council’s efforts go far beyond statutory obligations under the Armed Forces Act 2021. Initiatives include:
- Armed Forces Outreach Programme, supporting more than 300 people every month, from community cafés and craft groups to therapeutic activities like Models for Heroes.
- Annual Armed Forces Day celebrations, attracting thousands of residents and showcasing local cadet units and charities.
- Advocacy work that has seen 165 local organisations sign the Covenant, strengthening employment and healthcare support for veterans, with 14 new members in the last twelve months.
- Revalidation of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award, demonstrating the Council’s leadership in championing Armed Forces-friendly policies, and the ongoing support for the Council’s Armed Forces Staff Network.
- Recognising D (Shropshire Yeomanry) Squadron, based at the Army Reserve Centre in Dawley, with Freedom of the Borough in recognition of their conspicuous and dedicated service to the Borough.
Looking ahead, the Council is proposing further investment to make its Armed Forces Outreach Coordinator role permanent and to fund a dedicated Hub Manager, ensuring long-term sustainability and enhanced support.
Cllr Paul Davis, Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride, said:
“Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to champion the Armed Forces Covenant and to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who serve, have served, and their families. Our new Community Hub and expanded outreach programme reflect our unwavering commitment to fairness, respect, and practical support. We want every member of our Armed Forces community to feel valued and connected, and these initiatives are a vital step towards that goal.”
