The investment will expand evening and weekend opportunities for young people through activities shaped by those taking part. It will strengthen the existing network of 32 youth clubs and programmes such as Urban Games and Telford Kicks, alongside mentoring, volunteering and coaching that help build skills, confidence and future opportunities beyond sport.

Since 2021, the programme has delivered measurable results, with crime down by 12 per cent, anti‑social behaviour reduced by up to 45 per cent in some areas, and fly‑tipping down by up to 43 per cent, alongside expanded opportunities for young people and stronger local communities.

The Council has committed a further £1.5 million over the next four years to protect this proven programme, ensuring neighbourhood‑led action continues across the borough. Delivered with councillors, residents and community groups, the programme focuses on tackling crime and anti‑social behaviour, violence against women and girls, housing quality, youth support and health.

Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing & Enforcement, said: “Building Safer & Stronger Communities has delivered real results and made a genuine difference to people’s everyday lives, which is why the Council is stepping in to fund this important work.

“This commitment will allow us to work with partners, including West Mercia Police, to tackle crime and anti‑social behaviour while rapidly responding to the issues residents raise with us. By committing this funding, we’re showing how seriously we take the safety and well-being of residents.”

By funding the programme directly, the Council is putting its protect, care and invest ethos into action - protecting community safety, caring for neighbourhoods, and investing in long‑term

While keeping Council Tax the lowest in the Midlands, around 70p of every £1 the Council spends goes towards protecting and supporting vulnerable children, people with disabilities and older residents.

At the same time, millions of pounds are being invested to improve the things residents rely on every day - including better homes and roads, expanded schools, improved bus services and support for local high streets.

The Building Safer & Stronger Communities programme is one example of how the Council uses its budget to focus on what matters most to residents and making sure money is spent where it makes the biggest difference.
