Council secures additional parking spaces for Telford Theatre
Telford & Wrekin Council has finalised the purchase of land adjacent to the Telford Theatre car park in Oakengates which will create in excess of 30 new, additional parking spaces.
Plans are being submitted to redevelop this area, creating extra parking for theatre goers and visitors and businesses who are based in, or visit, the town centre.
The new spaces will be created once the main theatre building project works are completed and will be free in line with the Council's long term commitment to provide free car parking in Oakengates.
The theatre will create 12 full-time jobs, as well as many more part-time roles, and is expected to attract 100,000 visitors across 300 shows annually during its anticipated 60-year life span.
Plans for a bigger and better theatre include:
- Impressive new entrance and boulevard
- 2 new theatre spaces (main auditorium and theatre studio)
- Larger community and rehearsal areas
- Spacious new bar and restaurant
- Additional toilet facilities
This multi-million pound project will see the full demolition and replacement of the theatre which was originally built in the 1960s and was suffering from significant structural defects as well as reaching the end of its building life.
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said:
“We've always been looking at ways to increase the number of car parking spaces in Oakengates to benefit theatre goers and the wider Oakengates business and visitor community.
"Traders, residents, Oakengates Town Council and local Ward Members Councillors Steve Reynolds, Gilly Reynolds and Hilda Rhodes, have all asked for the additional free parking provision.
"We're pleased to have secured this land for these extra spaces which will be created as soon as the main theatre works are complete.
"They will remain free as part of our long term commitment to maintaining free parking across all Council-owned car parks where there is currently free parking.
"This is all part of our investment to make Telford and Wrekin a better place to live, learn, work and socialise."
