Council scoops national home adaptations award
Telford & Wrekin Council has won a prestigious national award after developing an innovative approach to stairlift installations in properties across the borough - supporting more residents to live independently in their homes for longer.
The Council landed the ‘Sustainability in Home Adaptations' award at the National Healthy Housing Awards.
Working closely with Stannah Stairlifts, the Council has established a process to routinely move stairlifts in properties which are no longer required before fully refurbishing them to meet high safety and quality standards and reinstalling them in another property where they are needed.
The process means that this valuable piece of equipment is reused rather than wasted making efficient use of resources and ensuring quick turnarounds and cost-effective solutions for residents.
This approach delivers significant benefits for residents and the Council – reducing costs and helping the Council support more residents within budget and with timely adaptations.
Telford & Wrekin Council’s Home Improvement Agency supports residents applying for Disabled Facilities Grants by carrying out adaptations in their home, recommended by an occupational therapist, to help them live as independently as possible.
Councillor Richard Overton (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement, said:
“Supporting our residents in housing across the borough is always our priority.
“We are delighted to win this award which highlights how we are using our resources efficiently by making sure that valuable pieces of equipment such as stairlifts are reused and reinstalled in homes where residents need them the most.
“This is a seamless system and means that residents can have a refurbished stairlift installed quickly and efficiently in their property and also demonstrates a sustainable approach to home adaptations which we are proud of.”
