Council launches new tenancy intervention role to help landlords

Telford & Wrekin Council has appointed a Tenancy Intervention Officer to support both landlords and tenants, with a focus on sustaining tenancies and preventing eviction wherever possible.

The new role will work proactively with landlords at an early stage, offering guidance and practical advice before formal action is taken. By intervening early, the officer aims to help resolve issues and reduce the need for notices to be served.

At the same time, the Tenancy Intervention Officer will engage directly with tenants to ensure they understand their responsibilities under their tenancy.

They will also identify any underlying support needs and provide access to appropriate services, helping tenants to maintain their homes and avoid enforcement action.

This collaborative, preventative approach is designed to strengthen relationships between landlords and tenants, improve tenancy sustainment, and reduce the risk of homelessness.

The measure is part of a wider package of Council support for tenants and landlords and follows last week’s reminder that landlords of smaller HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation) can take advantage of an early bird discount for their licence application which is required from August after new rules were announced.

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Safer Streets and Better Housing, said:

“This new role is designed to support both landlords and tenants and ensure that a complete eviction is the last resort wherever possible.

“The officer will provide advice and guidance to both parties and act as a mediator between the two where there are any problems.

“Hopefully, as any cases arise landlords and tenants can benefit from the advice and support which this new role will bring.”
