Council invests in libraries with launch of new digital system
Telford and Wrekin library users will soon benefit from a brand-new online catalogue and improved digital services as a new Library Management System launches on Wednesday 30 September.
The new system will replace the former platform with a more modern and flexible solution, making it easier for customers to access and manage library services while creating opportunities for further improvements in the years ahead.
Telford & Wrekin Council is continuing to invest in the future of its library services through the new system, which forms part of a wider programme of digital improvement across the Borough's libraries and demonstrates the Council's ongoing commitment to the communities they serve.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:
"Libraries continue to play an important role in the lives of many residents, providing access to books, information, digital resources and community support services.
"At a time when councils across the country are facing significant financial pressures, we remain committed to investing in our libraries so they can continue to meet the needs of our communities now and in the future.
"This new system is a significant improvement that will modernise the way our libraries operate, provide a better experience for customers and give us a stronger platform for future development. We appreciate residents' patience while the change is implemented and thank our staff and volunteers for their support in making the transition a success."
To support the introduction of the new system, library data will be safely transferred during a short migration period. Libraries will remain open throughout, with customers continuing to be able to borrow and return books with support from library staff.
However, as with any major technology upgrade, some online and self-service functions may be temporarily unavailable while the transition is completed. This includes book reservations, which will be temporarily paused during the changeover and will available again from 5 October, and online renewals which will not be available on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September. No fines will be charged during the transition, and due dates will be automatically extended where necessary. The Council's First Point services will not be affected, but public computers and printing services will also be unavailable on those two days.
These short-term changes will help deliver a more modern and flexible library service, with improved digital capabilities for customers in the future. Residents are thanked for their patience and understanding during this period.
This project has been made possible through funding from the Libraries Improvement Fund (LIF). The Department for Culture, Media and Sport funds LIF, which is administered by Arts Council England.
