Council backs local venues to deliver safe and vibrant World Cup experience
As the excitement builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Council is encouraging residents to support local venues while enjoying the tournament safely and responsibly.
With matches set to draw large crowds and extended opening hours in place for the duration of the competition, pubs, bars and clubs across the borough are preparing to welcome fans for what promises to be a memorable summer of football.
Local venues have been working hard behind the scenes, investing in additional staff, security and fan zones, to create a safe and enjoyable matchday atmosphere. These efforts are being supported through close collaboration between the Council, licensing teams and local Police.
Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Safer Streets and Better Housing said: “This World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for our communities to come together and enjoy the buzz of live football. Our local venues play a vital role in this, supporting jobs, businesses and our local economy.
“We’ve been working closely with venues and partners to help ensure they’re ready for increased demand, particularly with late kick-offs and extended licensing hours. We want everyone to enjoy the tournament safely, so we’re asking residents to play their part, support your local, respect staff, and celebrate responsibly.”
To support the tournament, licensed venues may be able to extend their opening hours for home nation matches, subject to meeting licensing conditions. For fixtures kicking off between 5pm and 9pm, venues can remain open until 1am, while later kick-offs may allow opening until 2am. For any additional extensions, venues are required to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN).
The Council is also reminding venue operators to ensure they are fully compliant with licensing requirements, including permissions for late-night refreshment and the use of outdoor spaces.
Key advice for venues includes:
- Check licensing permissions cover extended hours
- Ensure authorisation for serving food and drink after 11pm
- Keep outdoor screens and activities within licensed areas or covered by a TEN
- Plan ahead and seek advice early if additional permissions are required
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the atmosphere, cheer on their teams and make the most of the events taking place across the borough.
